Janelle, a young Chicana from Albuquerque, NM, has dedicated herself to championing educational equity and youth empowerment. Since the age of 13, Janelle has been at the forefront of advocating for the voices and rights of students in the public school system. With more than a decade of experience working in schools and the community, she has established a remarkable track record in ensuring that all students and teachers have a seat at the decision-making table within Albuquerque Public Schools (APS).
Janelle's passion for creating change at APS has led her to organize and support numerous events and dialogues that center on the experiences and perspectives of students, teachers, and community members. Furthermore, she has collaborated with APS administration to deliver anti-racism training sessions to staff members, fostering a more inclusive educational environment. In her pursuit of student leadership development and advocacy, Janelle co-founded a youth group that empowers young individuals to take charge and make a difference.
Janelle's commitment to making a positive impact in the education sector extends beyond advocacy. She has served as an Education Assistant, Substitute Teacher, and Family Liaison in various schools, garnering firsthand experience in supporting student growth and facilitating connections between families and educational institutions. Her dedication to bilingualism is evident through her bilingual seal recipient recognition. Building on her educational journey, Janelle graduated with a bachelor's degree in Chicano/a Studies and Political Science. This achievement not only broadened her knowledge base but also equipped her with the tools to contribute meaningfully to her community.
