Joanna Kelley

Joanna is a dedicated public servant currently serving her first term as Assistant Mayor in Portsmouth, NH. In 2021, she made history as the first African American elected in Portsmouth's council and state history, breaking barriers and paving the way for others.

Growing up with her grandparents and as a ward of the state in New Hampshire, Joanna experienced firsthand the challenges of not feeling rooted in one place. As one of the few minority children in the region, she was determined to create positive change.

Joanna's love for Portsmouth and its people deepens every day, and she is passionate about fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for both her employees and the community. Her primary goal is to equalize opportunities and ensure that all individuals, especially younger and BIPOC audiences, feel a genuine sense of belonging and actively participate in the decision-making process at the municipal level.

With her commitment to the vibrant community she is proud to be part of, Joanna is running for reelection. She will continue to engage in dialogue, seeking ways to create a level playing field and promote inclusivity throughout Portsmouth. By advocating for a more inclusive city, Joanna is determined to enhance the overall well-being and unity of her constituents.
