Jivan Sobrinho-Wheeler

City Council, At-Large, Cambridge, MA

2023 Endorsement

Jivan is a firm believer in the positive impact of local government and its role in shaping communities. Growing up in subsidized housing and benefiting from health insurance through CHIP, he personally experienced the transformative power of public commitments. Now, in his bid for City Council, Jivan aims to leverage his own experiences to address key challenges in Cambridge, such as housing and childcare affordability, sustainability, and improved transportation systems.

During his previous tenure on the City Council in 2020-2021, Jivan demonstrated his dedication to the community. He played a crucial role in the creation of hundreds of affordable homes in Cambridge, advocated for safer streets for pedestrians and cyclists, and championed a drive for greater governmental transparency and accountability. Following his term on the Council, he took up the position of New England Progressive Governance Director for the Working Families Party. In this capacity, he collaborated with elected officials and advocates across New England, focusing on critical issues like affordable housing and childcare.

As a renter himself, Jivan is keenly aware of the needs and concerns of the two-thirds of Cambridge residents who also rent. Living with his partner and their cat, Eden, in a triple-decker apartment, he prioritizes the perspective of renters and seeks to amplify their voices. With a background in organizing and a firm commitment to democratic socialism, Jivan brings a unique and passionate approach to addressing the challenges faced by the community he cares deeply about.
